Drivers — Cold Weather Advice

With cold temperatures set to hit the UK this weekend, Cover4Insurance is offering the following essential advice to drivers.

  1. People should reduce their speed and make sure that they leave plenty of room between their car and the one in front, as the stopping distance will increase. We would advise that you allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front.
  2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
  3. Turn on your lights even in daylight hours to increase your visibility to other motorists.

  4. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills. For cars that are not being regularly used, ensure you turn the engine over and keep it running so the battery stays energised, it's always a good idea to give your car a good run out once a month.
  5. When de-icing your car, do not leave it unattended with the keys in the ignition while you warm up the inside of your car. Many cars are stolen in this way each year by opportunist thieves.
  6. You should check your tyres, battery and wiper blades condition. Make sure the lights are fully functioning and double check oil and fuel levels before setting off.
  7. Keep a warm coat or blanket in the car in case of a breakdown. If you’re doing a long journey, pack some emergency supplies such as a flask of hot tea and a few sandwiches.
  8. Take your breakdown telephone helpline number and your mobile phone with you on all journeys.
  9. Check anti-freeze levels and carry de-icer in case the locks freeze. It is also useful to keep a torch, ice scraper - and in extreme weather conditions -wellington boots and a shovel in your car.
  10. With much of the UK expected to be hit by cold temperatures over the coming days, it’s important that homeowners and drivers are well prepared. By following this advice, you can help limit any potential problems that may occur.

  11. Always make sure you have adequate car & breakdown insurance.
