One-night-stand theft warning

Safe sex

People need to take extra precautions against the risk of one-night-stands in order to protect themselves against theft especially during the festive period.

Most people are aware of the personal risks or one-night stands including contracting sexually transmitted infections or exposing themselves to sexual and physical assault. However, they fail to maintain their guard against theft.

Thefts after one-night stands are often not reported because the victim feels guilty, embarrassed or that they’re to blame. We operate mainly in the student market and these types of thefts have been happening for many years and due to peoples reluctance to officially report the theft and nature of how it happened, many people would not be insured for the loss.

But at this time of year people are more vulnerable with office parties, sports team parties etc happening every night its not just students that are exposed to this risk. We all need to remain cautious against crime to protect our welfare. This includes taking steps such as not drinking too much and inviting strangers’ homes, and making sure personal items are properly insured.

How you can combat crime

  • Many thefts occur because the victim has often drunk to much alcohol. Keep hold of your sense by not binge drinking.
  • Find out as much information about the person you may be spending the night with as possible. You can then decide if they are unscrupulous or if you do fall victim, the police may be able to trace them.
  • Do not leave valuable such as jewellery lying around on display
  • Do not flaunt cash or expensive possessions – this could make you a target.
  • Tell your friends/housemates where you are staying the night or if you are inviting somebody to stay.
  • Make sure that you are insured. Also check if your policy covers against walk in theft and being mugged
